Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information dawnflight collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. dawnflight is operated by [Company legal name] ("dawnflight", "we", "us").
The short version
- We collect what we need to run dawnflight: your account, your wake-up schedule, your flocks and your accountability partners.
- If you add accountability partners, dawnflight notifies them when you break your streak.
- We don't sell your information, and we don't use it for advertising or to track you across other apps and websites.
- We keep simple records of how the app is used, like which screens and features get used, so we can fix problems and make dawnflight better.
- Step counting happens only on your phone.
- You can delete your account and data anytime in Settings.
Information you give us
- Account: your email address, password, username and display name. Passwords are handled by our sign-in provider; we never see them.
- Profile and settings: your wake-up and bedtime schedule, alarm preferences, streaks, bird and nest cosmetics, gold, vacation dates, and personal check-in places (name, address and map pin).
- Flocks: flocks you create or join, flock names and cities, event names, dates, times and meetup spots, and your RSVPs.
- Accountability partners: the dawnflight users you ask to be your partner or who ask you, and whether each request was accepted. If you invite a friend by text, we save the name and phone number you enter (so you can re-send the invite) and the invite code we create for them.
Information collected when you use dawnflight
- Wake-ups: when you verify a wake-up and whether it was on time, and what happened each wake day (up on time, a streak freeze, or a miss). If your wake day ends and the app hasn't recorded a wake-up or a freeze, we record that morning as missed.
- Early Bird: your progress on each daily puzzle is saved on your phone. When you catch the day's word, your rank for that day is sent to us so your flockmates can see it.
- Location, only while you're using the app and only if you allow it: we use it to check you in at a flock meetup or personal check-in spot, and to show nearby places when you search for a meetup spot. For flock check-ins, your location is compared with the meetup spot and only the distance is saved.
- Motion and fitness: dawnflight counts steps with your phone's motion sensors to confirm you're out of bed. Step counts stay on your device and are never sent to us.
- App usage: when you open the app, the screens you visit, the features you use (like Early Bird games, flock actions and the Go Pro screen), the bird and nest cosmetics you equip, buy or unlock, permissions you've turned down, and the app version and build you're on. This is linked to your account.
- Before you sign up: as you go through the welcome and sign-up screens, we record which steps you reach, using a random ID made for that install of the app. It isn't linked to your name, email or account.
- Approximate area: the city, region and country you're using dawnflight from, so we can see where our users are. We work this out from your internet connection's IP address when the app sends usage records (we don't store the IP address itself), or from your flock's city or time zone. It's never your exact location, and it doesn't use your phone's location permission.
- Device information: a push notification token (if you allow notifications), your time zone, and basic technical information needed to run the service.
Custom alarm sounds you upload stay on your device. Share cards are created on your device, and you choose where to share them. Inviting an accountability partner by text opens your own Messages app, and you send the message; dawnflight doesn't read your contacts.
What other people can see
Your flockmates can see your display name, bird, streaks, distance flown, RSVPs and check-ins, your rank on the day's Early Bird puzzle, and (depending on the organizer's settings) whether you've woken up that day. Your alarm times are never shown. Organizers see requests to join their flock. Rankings show flock names, cities and totals.
Your accountability partners can see your display name and current streak. When you miss a wake-up and your streak breaks, they get a notification from dawnflight with your display name and the length of the streak you lost. They aren't notified when you use a streak freeze or are on vacation, and they never see your alarm times. Anyone who knows your username or shares a flock with you can ask you to be their partner, and they see your display name even before you accept. Blocking someone stops partner requests and notifications between you.
How we use information
- To run dawnflight: alarms, wake-up verification, streaks, flocks, events, check-ins and the Nursery.
- To send notifications you've allowed, like join requests, new events, partner requests and bedtime reminders, and to let your accountability partners know when you break your streak.
- To keep dawnflight safe and fair: prevent fraud and cheating, enforce our Terms, and respond to reports.
- To understand how dawnflight is used (which features and screens people use, where our users are, and how each app version is doing) so we can fix problems and improve it. We look at these numbers in totals, not to build a profile of you.
- To answer your questions and improve dawnflight.
We don't sell personal information, share it for targeted advertising, or use it to track you.
Services that help run dawnflight
We use a few providers who may only use your information to provide their service to us:
- Supabase: hosts our database and account sign-in.
- Expo (650 Industries): delivers push notifications. It receives your push token and the notification's text.
- Photon by komoot: powers place search. It receives what you type and, if you've allowed location, your approximate area so it can show nearby results. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
- Apple: Apple Maps, alarms (AlarmKit) and App Store purchases.
- ZenQuotes: provides the quotes on the home screen. We don't send it any of your personal information.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete your profile, settings, flock memberships, partner connections, wake-up results and check-ins. Flocks you own are deleted with your account, and so are your app usage records. We delete the records of each screen you view and each time you open the app after about 90 days, keeping only a daily summary (whether and how often you used the app that day, which app version, and your approximate area) and overall totals. Your other usage records, such as games played, cosmetics and Go Pro views, are kept while your account is open. We may keep limited records we're required to keep for legal, tax or accounting reasons. Backups are overwritten on a regular schedule.
Your choices and rights
- See, correct or export your information: most of it is visible and editable in the app, or email us for a copy.
- Accountability partners: remove a partner, cancel an invite or stop keeping someone honest anytime in Settings → Accountability partners. Either of you can end a partnership.
- Delete your account and data: Settings → Delete account.
- Permissions: you can turn off location, motion and notifications anytime in iOS Settings. Features that need them won't work while they're off.
Depending on where you live (for example California), you may have rights to know, access, correct and delete your personal information, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We don't sell or share personal information for targeted advertising. To make a request, email dawnflightsupport@gmail.com. We'll verify it's you and respond within the time the law requires, and we won't treat you differently for using your rights.
Children
dawnflight isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child under 13 has given us information, email us and we'll delete it.
Security and where data is stored
We use encryption in transit and access controls to protect your information, but no service can be perfectly secure. dawnflight is operated from the United States, and your information is processed and stored there.
Changes to this policy
If we make changes, we'll update the date above. For important changes, we'll let you know in the app before they take effect.
